Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a vCIO?

While outsourcing the support and maintenance of your IT Operations is a wise decision, it will not provide solutions for all your IT needs. IT vendors focus on a narrow slice of your IT operations. Some provide support and maintenance; others provide hardware or software products you use or build out your network infrastructure. You need someone with expertise and familiarity with the IT industry to tie it all together. The vCIO evaluates and oversees your providers while acting as a bridge between you and them. The vCIO leads strategic planning and budgeting for short and long-term IT investments, and spearheads your IT initiatives, creating alignment between your company and your vendors.

What’s the difference between an “IT Guy” and the vCIO?

A vCIO is not your typical “IT guy”. While he is knowledgeable in the nuts-and-bolts aspects of computers, he operates on a managerial level. The vCIO is concerned with the big picture of your IT operations, security, user training and long-term infrastructure development. The vCIO oversees your IT vendors, manages your IT projects, guides decision making processes on the company level and aligns IT with your long-term strategic objectives.

What’s the difference between the vCIO and a Managed Services Provider (MSP)?

The main goal of an MSP is to provide support and maintenance services for your IT infrastructure. Their focus is on keeping your computers in working order and making sure you can access the Internet and email. The goal of the vCIO is to manage your relationship with the MSP. We act as a bridge and an overseer in this triangle. For the MSP, we provide much needed insight into how your company functions and what your IT needs really are. For your business, we translate the technical jargon the MSP uses into understandable language and guide you through any necessary updates and changes to your IT infrastructure.

In order to streamline your IT Operations you will need to contract with an MSP. You will be working with Changepoint to find one and manage the relationship. Changepoint will oversee the work the MSP does and translate the technical jargon they use into everyday language you can understand. Changepoint will also act as the single-point of contact for the MSP (and all your other vendors) in dealing with your users and equipment.

Do I have to have an MSP to work with Changepoint?

Why can’t my MSP provide vCIO services for me?

Virtual CIO services are out of scope for an MSP. Although many MSPs attempt to provide vCIO services, this presents a conflict of interest. An MSP cannot be the one to ensure that it delivers quality products and services. A third party needs to vouch for the work of an MSP. That’s why you need a vCIO who has your best interest in mind.
